About Lucy:

Lucy M. De La Cruz, MD, is Chief of Breast Surgery & Director of the Betty Lou Ourisman Breast Health Center at MedStar Georgetown University Hospital (MGUH), as well as director of the hospital’s breast surgery fellowship program. She is also a member of Georgetown Lombardi Comprehensive Cancer Center.

Background & Experience:

Lucy is a native Cuban who was raised in Africa and spent most of her later childhood in Miami, Florida. She attended the Universidad Central Del Este in Dominican Republic for medical school, where she was one of the founders of the American Medical Student Association (AMSA) at that institution. She held numerous leadership positions within AMSA during medical school and helped raise money to create two academic scholarships for students every year. She also assisted in creating the AMSA library, which provided access to local students to medical books and internet, as well as a designated area for studying.

Lucy completed her internship and residency at the University of Miami and was an active member of the American College of Surgeons, Florida Chapter. She was elected by her peers to be secretary and then chair of their resident committee. During residency, Lucy became a member of the Alpha Omega Alpha Medical Honor Society because of her dedication to medical student teaching and mentoring in surgery.

Lucy’s work on Nipple Sparing Mastectomy oncologic outcomes won a scientific impact award at the American Society of Breast Surgeons national meeting and has been sighted worldwide. She finished her breast surgery fellowship at the University of Pennsylvania, where she was also the Henle Fund Research Fellow. After graduation, she served as the associate program director of Breast Surgery Fellowship at the University of Pennsylvania and program director of the Breast Fellowship at Inova Schar Cancer Institute, where she created the curriculum.

Lucy was recently recruited by Georgetown University to be the Chief of Breast Surgery and new director of the Betty Lou Ourisman Breast Health Center at MGUH, as well as director of the hospital’s breast surgery fellowship program. She will also be joining the Georgetown Lombardi Comprehensive Cancer Center as the youngest Latina woman to hold the position of Chief of Breast Surgery in an academic center in the United States.

Lucy is fluent in English, Spanish and Portuguese. Outside the medical arena, her interests include spending time with her two boys, traveling, writing poetry and yoga.
