Women in leadership: Stop underestimating yourselves!

April 28, 2015 Rachael Marangu

Ever wonder how accurately women measure their own strengths? Recent Linkage research suggests, not very well. In fact research shows that women routinely underestimate the caliber of their skills and strengths, and further, in comparison to how men evaluate themselves, women prove to be significantly more critical when evaluating their own skills.

Sadly, that’s only the beginning. The data we collected from over 500 high-potential women leaders who joined us at our 2014 Women in Leadership Institute emphasizes that, on average, women rate themselves markedly lower in all three of Linkage’s core competency areas in comparison to how their peers, bosses, and mentors rate them.

Just to share context, these are high-potential women who (in many cases) had been hand-selected for this high-profile event specifically because they are poised for career advancement. And yet…they evaluate their skills as lower than those of their peers. Sounds unbelievable, but it’s true. And it’s just one of the many reasons why Linkage is passionate about advancing leaders at every stage of development, especially women.

The facts are clear: organizations with women in senior leadership roles outperform those organizations without significant female representation in leadership roles. These organizations enjoy a higher ROE, ROI, and put simply, stronger bottom-line results.

What does it all mean? Investing in female leadership is essential to maximize results at all levels, and that’s at the core of what makes the Women in Leadership Institute so unique. Leaders joining us this year will not only learn how to unlock valuable insights from their individual Women in Leadership Assessment, but they’ll also learn valuable skills, competencies, and tools proven to accelerate advancement, maximize potential, and deliver significant results for them as well as their organizations.

This year’s Women in Leadership Institute takes place on November 2-5 in Phoenix, AZ. The question is: Can you afford to miss it?
