In 2008, as the country experienced the biggest economic downturn since the Great Depression, Alan Mulally was guiding Ford Motor Company, one of the world’s most valuable brands, through crisis. As CEO, he was responsible for the financial future of the organization, maintaining the continued high quality of the brand and its products, and for the well-being of his employees. He faced a tremendous challenge, in a highly uncertain and volatile time. 

Alan’s experience at Ford exemplifies the positive impact of leading with purpose through periods of uncertainty. He is the epitome of a Purposeful Leader—and as we all strive to meet the challenges of COVID-19, we can learn from the example he set.  

I am thrilled to announce that Alan will join me for a special virtual conversation on Thursday, April 9, at 2:00 PM EST on how to lead in a crisis. In the first installment of Linkage’s brand-new Critical Leadership Conversations series, Alan will share how the crisis of 2008 proved to be a critical time in the automobile industry and how his ability to lead purposefully repositioned Ford for success coming out of the recession.

About Alan Mulally

Alan Mulally served as president and chief executive officer of the Ford Motor Company and as a member of Ford’s board of directors from September 2006–June 2014. 

Mulally led Ford’s transformation into one of the world’s leading automobile companies and the #1 automobile brand in the United States. He guided Ford in working together on a compelling vision, comprehensive strategy, and implementation of the One Ford plan to deliver profitable growth for all the company’s stakeholders. 

Prior to joining Ford, Mulally served as executive vice president of the Boeing Company, president and CEO of Boeing Commercial Airplanes, and president of Boeing Information, Space and Defense Systems. 

Throughout his career, Mulally has been recognized for his contributions, industry leadership, and service, including being named #3 on Fortune’s “World’s Greatest Leaders,” one of the 30 “World’s Best CEOs” by Barron’s magazine, one of “The World’s Most Influential People” by Time magazine, and “Chief Executive of the Year” by Chief Executive magazine.
