According to Molly Gamble’s article Shattering Glass Ceilings: Women in the Hospital C-Suite, the female hospital executive is still largely underrepresented in top executive roles given their numbers in the field of healthcare. Women may have made strides, as surveys from the 1980s suggest, but a 2007 study found only 15 of the nation’s top 100 hospitals (as ranked by Solucient) were led by female CEOs. In Gamble’s article she writes about three female leaders from hospitals around the country who discuss their experience moving up the ranks, women in the workplace, striking a work-life balance and the future for women hospital CEOs. Since 1995, we here at Linkage have committed millions of dollars to research and program development for women leaders. For over a decade, the Women in Leadership Summit trained thousands of women leaders from over 35 countries. This year, our program development team researched how Linkage could further accelerate the progress of women in leadership.
We found:
- There are critical competencies and skills that enable leaders to drive results; capabilities women leaders need to accelerate in organizations today.
- When organizations send multiple high potential women to a learning experience, the speed of succession of women leaders in the organization increases.
- A high-impact, cohesive, and immersive learning experience that includes peer connection, deep skills-based learning, and on-going support is needed.
So, we created an experience that begins onsite with a self-assessment, continues with a 3 1/2 day immersion program featuring focused learning sessions and peer learning teams, and maintains development after the experience with the Global Women’s Network.
