Leading Leadership Development with Harley Ostis

January 19, 2012

What it means to be a leader…

Being called upon to lead represents one of the greatest privileges that I have been afforded in my working career. Watching talented people grow and excel while providing oversight for organizational results offers rewards simply not available on other career paths. Earlier in my career I would have thought about work that I had done in helping to get a business back on track, or the launch of a high impact program or project. As I would reflect today, the names of individuals would instead come to mind. People that I have had the privilege of having on my team, people who have gone on to significant responsibilities at senior levels within organizations. That is the leadership legacy that matters most.

Why I am in leadership development…

Of the many alternatives available in career paths, the focus on leadership development has afforded me the strongest connection to organizational efficacy. By helping leaders develop at all levels within an organization, we can see those organizations perform at higher levels of success and watch while organizations scale at times when the economy does not provide the “wind at our backs”. Coaching and developing leaders and their teams ultimately touches all aspects and levels of an organization. I have had the pleasure of watching leaders make critical adjustments to their operating styles, approaches and behaviors and seen the measurable impact of these efforts. Little else would allow such a direct connection to organizational success.
