Nando Parrado has spoken at GILD for years but his story never ceases to amaze and inspire us. Nando is one of the survivors of the Uruguayan flight that crashed in the Andes mountains in 1972. He endured a harrowing 72 days, surviving in an unsurvivable environment, before making an incredible trek out, leading to the miraculous rescue of the remaining survivors. You can read the facts of the ordeal here and an excerpt from Nando’s book here.
Over the course of five days at GILD, we heard from exceptional leaders who shared their tremendous insight to help us become better at what we do. And there are many lessons that Nando’s experience can teach us about teamwork, about dealing with adversity, about making tough decisions, about the role of luck, and about courage (it seems, however, that the line between courage and fear is razor thin). But when we hear his extraordinary story, we realize that his lessons can not only help us become better at what we do, but also in how we live our lives. So make it count.
