Geena Davis Institute teams up with Linkage to help reduce gender inequality

August 26, 2014

The Geena Davis Institute on Gender in Media, founded by the Academy Award®winning actor, is partnering with Linkage’s Women in Leadership Institute to help raise awareness and reduce gender inequality in the workplace.

“As we work to reduce negative gender stereotyping and gender inequality in entertainment, we believe it’s critical to have similar support for women in today’s workplace,” says Madeline Di Nonno, CEO, Geena Davis Institute on Gender in Media. “Through this new partnership with Linkage, we are able to do just that.”

“Geena and her Institute’s pioneering research have opened the eyes and doors of Hollywood, leading to greater gender diversity in children’s movies and television,” says Abri Holden, Director of Linkage’s Women in Leadership Institute. “Our goals are the same: to create a world where, ‘If she can see it, she can be it,’ whether that is through a character on a TV show or a woman leader thriving at the top of an organization.”

And Geena’s Institute is more than just partnering with Linkage, she’s also a co-chair and part of the keynote faculty at this year’s Women in Leadership Institute.

Geena Davis is one of the most respected actors of our time, a world-class athlete, a member of the genius society Mensa, and a tireless advocate for women and girls. She has been featured in such films as Thelma and Louise, A League of Their Own, Tootsie, Beetlejuice, The Long Kiss Goodnight, and many more.

She is also the founder of the non-profit the Geena Davis Institute on Gender in Media and its programming arm See Jane, which engages film and television creators to dramatically increase the percentages of female characters—and reduce gender stereotyping—in media made for children 11 and under. Ms. Davis is also an appointee to the California Commission on the Status of Women, and is a partner with United Nations Women in the effort to change the way media represents women and girls worldwide.
