As we gear up for our Women in Leadership Institute, we will be highlighting the contributions of exceptional women leaders around the world in our blog during the month of November. Angela Merkel is the Chancellor of Germany and the only woman included in the top 10 of the Most Powerful People list:

10. David Cameron, Prime Minister of the UK
9.   Mark Zuckerberg, Founder of Facebook
8.   Ben Bernanke, Chairman of the Federal Reserve
7.  Pope Benedict XVI, Pope of the Roman Catholic Church
6.  Abdullah bin Abdul Aziz al Saud, King of Saudi Arabia
5.  Bill Gates, Co-chair of the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation
4.  Angela Merkel, Chancellor of Germany
3.  Hu Jintao, President of the People’s Republic of China
2.  Vladimir Putin, Prime Minister of Russia
1.   Barack Obama, President of the US

Angela Merkel ranks fourth on the World’s Most Powerful People and #1 on the World’s Most Powerful Women list.  According to Forbes, she leads: “Europe’s most vibrant economy and is widely viewed as the de facto leader of the EU. A recent poll in France showed that the French have more faith in Germany’s leader (46%) than in their own president, Nicolas Sarkozy (33%). Germany must take bolder measures toward resolving the euro zone debt crisis, despite the political risks to Merkel’s ruling coalition.”

In total, there were 70 people who made Forbes’ Most Powerful People list – ultimately one for every 100 million people in the world. To view the full gallery, visit Forbes.com.
