Highly respected leadership expert and longtime GILD faculty member Marshall Goldsmith has some pretty strong advice for leaders who play favorites. Don’t do it!
As you’ll see in this video clip, if you’re thinking more about how much people like you (and are like you) rather than what their contribution is, chances are you’re playing favorites. You’re teaching your people to “suck up” rather than judging and rewarding others on merit. And that’s not an ideal leadership strategy.

So, be honest. Are you playing favorites? Are you encouraging your people to “suck up” even though everybody hates a “suck-up” (or at least a blatant “suck-up”)?
Marshall Goldsmith is a leadership expert and the best-selling author of over 30 management books, including the New York Times and Wall Street Journal best sellers, MOJO and What Got You Here Won’t Get You There.
