Leaders often feel they need to have all of the answers; that’s why we were promoted, right? Wrong. Leaders need to have great questions and live in a place of curiosity without judgement.
We need to recognize the power of diverse perspectives and the importance of creating a team where every member feels listened to, understood and respected. This means different things to different people based on their culture. Through this recognition, the power of perspectives can be fully realized and we can all accomplish more together.
We try really hard most of the time. And working hard is table stakes for most. But doing whatever it takes is simply not enough. We need focused attention on improving what matters the most. This practical real-life metaphor has worked for me, and for our team—when it comes to producing results.
We encourage the leaders we work with to look at the highs and lows of their life, diagram them, and look for themes and insights to emerge. The objective is to strengthen their leadership by understanding what makes them a leader (and the person) they are.
