Doris Kearns Goodwin on Team of Rivals

December 9, 2008-11:00-12:30 pm EST

Abraham Lincoln seemed to be underestimated from day one. Underestimated as both a leader and an orator, Mr. Lincoln surprised both his colleagues and his critics as he climbed the ranks toward political prominence. Once he ascended to the presidency, instead of surrounding himself with a cabinet of yes-men, Lincoln built a team filled with rivals of not only of himself but with each other. This president then proceeded to meld this group of large personalities together to form a team who guided the nation to victory during our darkest period of conflict. Participants in this program will be learning about Lincoln's superhuman empathy, superlative sense of political timing, and endless well of patience. But what really sets this leader apart was his ability to strike compromise and control his own emotions-whether under attack by subordinates or besieged by public opinion. Our 16th president provides us with learning opportunities in the areas of leadership, strategy, communication and emotional intelligence.

Participants in this program will learn:
Bullet Point The five most important leadership lessons we can learn from Abraham Lincoln
Bullet Point The importance of constructing the most able leadership team, not just a group meant to rubber stamp the leader's ideas
Bullet Point How to steadfastly follow the path toward completion of the goal in the face of trying circumstances and obstacles
Bullet Point Four important traits Lincoln shared with our other great presidents

Doris Kearns Goodwin is one of the most recognized historians of the day, and provides trenchant, informed and enthralling commentary on current events by demonstrating how history has answered similar questions. With a deft wit and an uncanny ability to weave stories that put you "right in the room" as history occurs, Goodwin offers extraordinary insight into the lives of the leaders who have shaped the United States.

Goodwin's most recent work, Team of Rivals: The Political Genius of Abraham Lincoln, inspires business and political leaders of today by teaching Lincoln's quiet but powerful leadership qualities - including his wisdom in building and maintaining teams in the midst of critically trying circumstances and his ability to overcome incredible obstacles. Steven Spielberg is developing the #1 best-selling book into a movie.

A brilliant historian and author of several best-selling books, Goodwin won the Pulitzer Prize for No Ordinary Time: Franklin and Eleanor Roosevelt. A contributor, both on and off the air, to the PBS documentaries LBJ, The Kennedys, FDR and Baseball, Goodwin is the person most turn to for a keen historical perspective on political and current events.

Mrs. Goodwin received her B.A. from Colby College, where she graduated Magna Cum Laude and then received her Ph.D. in Government from Harvard University, where she taught Government including a course on the American Presidency. Following her tenure at Harvard, Mrs. Goodwin served as an assistant to Lyndon Johnson in his last year in the White House. She later assisted Johnson in the preparation of his memoirs. In 1976, Mrs. Goodwin authored Lyndon Johnson & The American Dream, which became a New York Times best seller. She followed up in 1987 with the political biography, The Fitzgeralds and the Kennedys, which stayed on the New York Times Best-Seller List for five months.
