Michael Useem on Reaching the Go-Point

"In a moment of decision, the best thing you can do is the right thing to do. The worst thing you can do is nothing."

--Theodore Roosevelt

"Whenever you see a successful business, someone once made a courageous decision."

- Peter Drucker

Moments of decision are those times when an individual, team or organization faces the choice of going one way or another. These decisions eventually come down to a Go Point which is that moment when the information has been gathered, the pros and cons have been weighed and the time has come to get off of the fence. Such decisions are the heart of leadership and a main driver of organizational performance.

Participants in this program will learn:
Bullet Point how to master the art and science of being decisive when the consequences are big
Bullet Point the capabilities required for making good and timely decisions
Bullet Point the importance of building a network of trusted counselors and considering the future when making important decisions
Bullet Point through a diverse group of stories what was in the heads of a diverse group of leaders at their moment of truth and revealing how they made decisions when the stakes were high
Bullet Point the lessons leaders can apply to their own situations when analyzing the outcomes of their own decisions

Michael Useem is the Director of the Center of Leadership and Change and a professor of Management at the Wharton School of Business, University of Pennsylvania. He is the author of several books on leadership and decision making including his latest best seller, The Go-Point: When It's Time to Decide. His other books include The Leadership Moment: Nine True Stories of Triumph and Disaster and Their Lessons for Us All, How to Lead Your Boss So You Both Win, and Upward Bound: Nine Original Accounts of How Business Leaders Reached Their Summits. Professor Useem has consulted with a wide range of companies and government agencies on four continents include Bell Atlantic, Hewlett-Packard, Merrill Lynch, and the United Nations. Each year he organizes a leadership trek to Mount Everest for graduates of Wharton's MBA program designed to bring participants into a setting where they can learn from the experiences of others whose leadership was on the line.
