to do when she grew up. In 1973, she became the first woman in naval history to
serve as an Intelligence Officer in a Navy aviation squadron. Her career has
included hands-on leadership during every major conflict from the Cold War to

AMY KATES, on
trends in Organization Design
Amy Kates is an organization designer and co-author, with Jay Galbraith, of Designing
Your Organization. She is also the author of the award winning article
(Re)Designing the HR Function. What does today's internal OD
professional need to know in order to guide business leaders to good decisions?
As much as today's manager would like to run a simple business, complex
organizations aren't going away. Customer-centric strategies, the need for
innovation and organic growth, and global expansion all result in new business
models, ever changing portfolios, and intricate matrix relationships within the
organization. As leaders try to leverage size while nimbly responding to
changes in customers and competitors, they find themselves calling upon their
OD resources to help them make the organization a competitive advantage, rather
than an obstacle. Amy will discuss the latest trends in organization design,
whether it is better to buy or build organization design capability, and
emerging models for the design of the HR function with a focus on options for
deploying OD talent and skills.
